Problem
When attempting to update a CS141/BACS Webmanager, the update process fails at around 55–60% with the error message “cleanup CS141 failure”.
This typically occurs if the device is still running on a very old firmware (e.g. 1.7x/1.8x) and you try to directly install a modern version (e.g. 2.26).
Cause
The firmware upgrade path is strict. Very old versions cannot be upgraded directly to modern builds, because critical system components (bootloader, backend, etc.) must first be updated to a minimum baseline version.
Solution
Check current firmware version
On the CS141, go to System → About to view the installed firmware version.
Install intermediate step (1.90)
- First install firmware version 1.90.
- This version is the mandatory baseline for all later updates.
- If you do not have this version, request it from support.
Reboot
After updating to 1.90, restart the device.
Flash target firmware
Then install the desired current version (e.g. 2.26 hw141) as usual.
Tips
- Before updating, delete temporary files and logs to avoid storage issues.
- Ensure that you use the correct hardware variant (hw141/hw161/mini).
- If the update fails again, repeat the process step by step.
Contact
Firmware version 1.90 can be obtained directly from our support:

When requesting, please include the device serial number, the currently installed version and the target version you wish to update to.

I had to delete the logs etc from the tools menu on the CS141 BACS B4 before it would allow me to update and stop showing the Cleanup error.
